SKIPPACK, PA - This Press Release has been prepared to formally announce H&K Group, Inc.’s (H&K’s) acquisition of Finksburg, MD–based HTI Contractors (HTI) on Friday, December 19, 2025.
This acquisition comes at a time of tremendous strength and opportunity for H&K and occurs at a decisive transition point for HTI. Although the acquisition was only recently formalized, this partnership grew from a longstanding business relationship between two companies that share similar business ethics and operations, private family ownership and values, and exceptionally loyal workforces.
With 2025 marking HTI’s 55th year of business operations, the company’s history mirrors H&K’s in many ways, having also grown from the ground up. Founded in 1970 as Highland Turf, Inc. by Garnet S. Bean, the company welcomed William “Bill” McGrew as its fourth employee in 1977. In the early 1990s, Bill McGrew was offered sole ownership. Under his leadership, the company evolved from a small seeding and sod contractor into one of Maryland’s most respected excavation, paving, and utility contractors. In the decades that followed, and in a trend similar to H&K’s own growth, HTI expanded its heavy civil services to include stormwater systems, environmental work, pre-construction planning, site management, and public-sector infrastructure projects. Known for their reliability, technical expertise, quality workmanship, and longstanding industry relationships, HTI is widely recognized for its family-oriented culture and commitment to doing the job right.
In terms of the H&K/HTI relationship, credit is due to our Founder and Chairman of the Board, John B. Haines IV, and his counterpart at HTI, Bill McGrew, for cultivating a personal and business relationship over many years; rooted in mutual interests, similar business philosophies, and a shared appreciation for antique vehicles and equipment. This relationship fostered deep trust and respect, ultimately paving the way for discussions about business continuity and, ultimately, the natural integration of the HTI family into the H&K organization.
HTI’s base of operations in Finksburg, MD, approximately 30 minutes northwest of Baltimore, positions the company to effectively service all of Maryland and the greater Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan Area. HTI’s success is driven by an extremely dedicated,
safety-trained, and experienced workforce ranging between 100 and 150 employees depending on seasonal workload. The company also brings a modernized fleet of on- and off-road vehicles and equipment to the partnership. HTI will operate as a Division of H&K within the company’s Heavy Civil Construction Services group, and all existing HTI team members employed at the date of acquisition will be welcomed into the H&K employee family. Based on geographic proximity, operational, maintenance, and field support functions will be primarily managed through H&K’s Harrisburg Division.
